“My great grandmother immigrated from Puerto Rico with her beautiful embroidered garments. She didn’t speak any English, but she taught me that sewing is a language. As a young girl I would sit and watch my mother get ready.
The way that she would creatively select each piece was like watching a conductor command a symphony. I remember walking down the halls of my university and hearing the hum of the sewing machines - that sound felt like someone who had been searching for me, and finally found me.
I can still feel the tangible joy I had in seeing over 75 rolling racks of beautiful apparel during my first internship in New York City. I spent the last 7 years of my life dedicating my time to teaching students how to see themselves through the artistry of making.
Like pieces to a pattern getting ready to be sewn and made whole, so are the pieces of my story. This is what led us to creating Winifred Textile Studio.
As a new mom dreaming into my line of textiles, I found comfort in turning a blanket into a garment. All of my jackets and vests are sourced from quilts that either had a previous home, or were bought new. My body felt fragile in my postpartum season, and it made me see the fragility women walk through in carrying life.
Whether that fragility comes from giving care to children, being in a season of hardship, working a 9 to 5 job, studying in school or walking through the pain of trauma - I hope my pieces can offer comfort to each person who wears them. “
