What is Tallow?

Tallow is animal oil that has been slowly & carefully kettle-rendered from the suet of animals like cows or sheep. Our tallow is slowly, kettle-rendered from organically farmed and grass-fed/finished cows. Due to the diet and care of our cows, this gives our tallow an amazing vitamin and fatty acid profile that can only be found in animal oils. We have blended the animal oils from tallow with twitch the amazing plant-based-vitamins from coconut oils and essential oils to create the perfect blend of nourishment for your skin!

What is the Flying Cow Difference?

The difference in our tallows compared to others is three-fold. The first difference is our ingredients. We strive to get the most USDA certified organic oils in our products. Flying Cow also ensures our tallow comes from cows on small organic farms that are grass fed and grass finished. We also use only organic, unprocessed coconut oil. The second difference is the texture. Most tallows are hard and difficult to apply. We make our tallow light, fluffy, and pretty! It’s easy to apply and more easily absorbed by the skin. The third difference is that each jar is handcrafted in small batches to ensure quality and freshness.

Why use Tallow?

There is nothing new under the sun, and that is true with tallow. Tallow was prized by generations in the past, but as chemical products became more and more popular, tallow was left behind and forgotten. Now, as people are becoming more aware of the side effects of harsh chemicals and man-made products, we find ourselves turning back to what nature had provided all along. Tallow is filled with vitamins A, D, E, and K. These fat-soluble vitamins are naturally antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory.

How Do I use it?

There are several ways! Most people love to use it on their faces and bodies as a general moisturizer. Others use it for specific skin problems and irritations. Tallow can be used on the face and body as an all over moisturizer. Some use it for oil cleansing on the face as well. Everyone's skin reacts differently, but we've had customers tell us it has helped with relieving burns, eczema, cellulite, rashes, bites, cracked feet, razor burn, acne, aging, sun-damaged skin, tattoo care, baby care and more!

Is it going to be greasy?

Flying Cow Tallow Balm absorbs rapidly into your skin. The skin utilizes the nutrients quickly, and the tallow also works as the perfect carrier oil for the added essential oils in the tallow. You don't need to use very much at a time. If it feels greasy or hasn't soaked in - use less! Some people enjoy using it once a day in the evening as a night cream & don’t see a need to re-moisturize in the morning. Others use it as a primer before applying their makeup. Give your skin a couple weeks to adjust to it & play with it to see how much (start small!) and how many applications are best for you. You might think using an oil will only cause your skin to be oilier, but with patience, tallow can actually help regulate oil production.

How is tallow supposed to feel?

We make our tallow balms in small batches by hand, so the consistency may be slightly different from one jar to the next. Our tallow has a whipped icing feel. We do use the same recipe and method every time we make our tallow, but since it is an all natural product, there are a number of factors that are out of our control.

Every now and then, you may notice a different texture. Whether more whipped, or slightly gritty - this is to be expected as we refuse to add anything synthetic to our products that would more guarantee a consistent feel. If you notice your tallow is harder than normal or got too cold, massage it a bit when you apply so it soaks in. The good news is - even if the texture is off, the product is still as effective and works!

What we can control, we are very consistent in. We strive to create an amazing tallow with each batch we make, but if you are unhappy with your jar, message us the batch number and we can make sure you get another one. No need to keep your tallow refrigerated, but it will start to liquify around 85 to 100 degrees.

What about for babies or children? Using while Pregnant?

We love our Baby Moon for a belly balm. Using while pregnant has generally been known to be safe. As always, check with your healthcare provider before starting anything you are unsure about.

We typically recommend Baby Balm or Sleepy Baby Balm as they are our most gentle formulas. Baby Balm has no added oils, and Sleepy Baby just has a dash of lavender, which is typically mild enough for your littles.
