Particle Ceramics by Joanna Thatcher

Joanna was introduced to ceramics in 2001, but her journey into clay really began when she pursued a BFA in Studio Arts at Columbus State University. She kept her practice alive after her 2009 graduation, but it wasn’t until she and her husband set up a permanent studio in 2017 that Particle Ceramics was formed and her career in clay became an established passion.

Since that time, Joanna has become even more enamored with this craft and art form, as it also teaches the art of “failing” well. She has learned this through the many hours of teaching, coaching, and shared love of the process.

Her work is often described as playful yet intentional, with each piece reflecting her curiosity and reverence for the material. Joanna believes clay connects people—not only to the objects they use daily but also to the joy of creating something with their own hands. Through Particle Ceramics, she continues to explore how functional art can spark both beauty and belonging in everyday life.
