Lemon essential oil has been valued for centuries for its fresh scent and natural cleansing properties. Derived from the peel of the lemon fruit (Citrus limon), the oil is typically extracted through cold pressing, which preserves many of the fruit’s naturally occurring compounds. Historical Uses of Lemon

Historically, lemons themselves were widely used throughout Mediterranean cultures for their purifying and refreshing qualities. In the 18th and 19th centuries, citrus oils - including lemon - became especially valued for their aromatic qualities and were commonly used in perfumery and early natural remedies. Because lemons contain naturally occurring antimicrobial compounds, citrus oils were also historically used in household preparations and tonics intended to promote cleanliness and freshness.¹

Lemon Essential Oil in Skincare

Lemon essential oil is known for its bright, uplifting aroma, but it also contains compounds that can be beneficial in certain skincare formulations when used properly and in appropriate dilution.

• Cleansing properties: Lemon oil contains naturally occurring compounds such as limonene and citral that have demonstrated antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies. Because of this, lemon oil is sometimes incorporated into skincare products designed to help keep skin feeling fresh and clean.²
• Antioxidant content: Citrus oils contain antioxidants that may help support the skin by neutralizing free radicals. Antioxidants play a role in protecting the skin from environmental stressors that can contribute to visible aging.³
• Brightening appearance: Lemon oil is sometimes included in formulations intended to promote a brighter-looking complexion. Certain citrus compounds may help improve the appearance of dull or uneven-looking skin when properly formulated into skincare products.⁴
