Peppermint: Essential Oil Spotlight

Peppermint: Essential Oil Spotlight

Peppermint is known as a very distinctive scent and normally attached to teas or toothpastes. Beyond being what’s in your toothpaste, it has a long history.

Historically peppermint has been known and used for...

Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) can be traced back to ancient times. Even to the point that “Records of the uses and preparation of mint are found in the Ebers Papyrus, the oldest surviving medical text” [1]. Mint itself also has ties to Greek mythology, where rage, tragedy, and betrayal ended in a nymph named Minthe being turned into a “perennial herb” and being “bestowed…with a sweet smell” [2].

Throughout the ages, peppermint has not lost its popularity. It has been used in many forms, from tea, to aromatherapy, to skincare. Its benefits range from soothing irritation to being used against nausea and headaches [3]. It’s also great to use for cognitive function - give it a try next time you have a long study session [4].
